Background: As the political deadlock persists between Iran and the United States, 'The Albany' the flagship of the American Sixth Fleet left the Greek port of Piraeus on Tuesday (4 December) amid speculation that it would be joining other U.S. naval units strategically placed close to Iran.

SYNOPSIS: "The Albany" is a guided missile cruiser which is normally based int he Mediterranean as part of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. The ship's current destination has not been officially revealed, but informed sources believe it will join the aircraft carrier 'Forrestal' in the Eastern Mediterranean to be on hand if U.S. relations with Iran deteriorate further. The United States has already assembled it's largest fleet in the Indian Ocean since the second World War. So the United States has stationed in the region two aircraft carrier task forces, plus the Middle East task force -a total of nineteen vessels.

So far, the deployment of the fleet is interpreted by some observers as sabre-rattling. Most of the military options open to the Americans are fraught with heavy operational or political risk, present the spectre of open warfare. Yet the presence of nuclear-powered guided missile cruisers, destroyer and aircraft carriers so close to Iran has stirred international concern that the United States may finally resort to military action if the crisis can't be soon resolved.
