    THE BULLET-SHAPED VESSEL, 16 FEET LONG, WAS BUILT BY THE ELECTRIC BOAT COMPANY DIVISION OF GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION.

    THE ASHERAH WILL BE USED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA MUSEUM, SPONSOR OF AN EXPEDITION THAT WILL SEARCH THIS SUMMER FOR THE HULKS OF ANCIENT VESSELS IN THE AEGEAN SEA OFF THE COAST OF TURKEY. THE SHIP IS POWERED BY ELECTRIC MOTORS.

    MRS. GEORGE BASS, WHOSE HUSBAND IS SPECIAL ASSISTANT FOR ARCHAEOLOGY AT THE MUSEUM, SMASHED THE TRADITIONAL BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE ON THE VESSEL, WHICH CAN TRAVEL A SPEEDS UP TO FOUR KNOTS AND REMAIN SUBMERGED FOR TEN HOURS.
