    Background: Improved planning and management have boosted lotus seed crops in the Chugyuko People's Commune of Nanhsien County, in Hunan Province, The People's Republic of China.

    So far this year, harvesters have gathered one hundred tons of sees--more than last year, according to official sources.

    Lotus seeds--a delicacy now being exported in ever greater quantities--come from two strains, the summer and autumn lotus. The former is also known as the white lotus and has large seeds with thin coats and is rich in starch and very fragrant. And apart from being a delicacy in Chinese cooking, the seeds are also an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine.
