Background: On the second day of his 36,000 mile Asian and Pacific tour, the Duke of Edinburgh paid homage at Mahatma Gandhi's monument, at Raj Ghat, Jan 22. Shoes off he stood in silence after placing a wreath on the memorial. He good-humouredly reproved press photographers for lack of respect in climbing over the memorial wall to film the brief ceremony.
Lunch was taken with President Prasad at the Presidential Palace where there was also a reception for the Duke and delegates to the 46th. Session of the Indian Science Congress.
Afterwards the Duke chatted with President Prasad and Premier Nehru.
The Duke of Edinburgh's itinerary includes tours of Pakistan, Singapore, Sarawak, North Borneo, Hongkong, the Solomon Gilbert, Ellice and Christmas Isles, Panama and West Indies. 19,700 miles by air and 16,300 by sea. He is scheduled to arrive back in Britain on April 30.
