Background: Calling themselves the Revolutionary Council, 12 Kenyans have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to overthrow the Kenya government by unlawful means.

Details of the attempted coup filtered from the courtroom Friday (June 4) when the plotters appeared to hear the guilty verdict pronounced.

The coup had been planned for April 8, the start of the festive great car test, the Highland Rally, was foiled two days before when the conspirators were captured in State House, Dar Es Salaam, and turned over to police.

The twelve had been attempting to enlist the aid of President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, the Soviet Embassy in Nairobi and a trade union official in the United States.

The court will pronounce sentence on Monday.

SYNOPSIS: Details of a planned coup against the government of Kenya, were revealed in a Nairobi court on Friday. The coup had been planned for the eighth April., but was discovered two days before. Twelve alleged conspirators were captured in Dar Es Salaam and turned over to police. The twelve, calling themselves the Revolutionary Council, entered court to plead guilty to the conspiracy charge.

In court, the Deputy Public Prosecuter, James Karugu, quoted a statement from one of the alleged plotters. In preparing for the coup, the accused approached President Nyerere of Tanzania, the Soviet Embassy in Nairobi, and a Trade union official in the United States for cash and arms.

The prosecuter said that the twelve men in court were not the only members of the conspiracy, and that an intensive investigation was continuing. The court adjourned until Monday, when the prosecution and defence will conclude their cases. All twelve have been convicted, based on their guilty pleas, and sentencing in expected on Monday.
