• Short Summary

THE SECOND DAY OF THE GIBRALTAR TALKS BETWEEN BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON AND RHODESIAN LEADER IAN SMITH CONCLUDED TODAY (FRIDAY) WITH APPARENTLY NO SETTLEMENT TO THE RHODESIA ISSUE IN SIGHT.

  • Description

KENT AND FEARLESS MOORED TOGETHER; SMITH INTERVIEWED BY NEWSMEN (SOF); SMITH WALKS FORM KENT TO FEARLESS.

TRANSCRIPT: QUESTION: "HAVE YOU SETTLED THE POINTS OF ISSUE TO BE DISCUSSED?"

SMITH: "THERE ARE A LOT OF POINTS TO DISCUSS QUITE FRANKLY -- YOU KNOW IT'S BIG SUBJECT. WE HAVE MADE A START. I WON'T TELL YOU WHETHER I THINK WE'VE MADE GOOD PROGRESS OF NOT. THE MAIN THING IS THAT WE HAVE MADE A START AND I HOPE WE'LL BE IN A POSITION TO GIVE YOU SOME IDEA AS TO WHETHER WE HAVE MADE PROGRESS OR NOT IN A COUPLE OF DAYS TIME."

QUESTION: "DO YOU SEE A LONG ROAD AHEAD?"

SMITH: "YES, BUT IT CAN'T BE ALL THAT LONG. I THINK AFTER TWO OR THREE DAYS WE SHOULD HAVE COME TO A STAGE WHEN WE WILL KNOW WHETHER WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A BREAKTHROUGH OR NOT."

QUESTION: "MR SMITH CAN YOU GIVE US A MESSAGE HOME TO RHODESIA?"

SMITH: "I DON'T THINK THERE'S A GREAT DEAL MORE THAN TO WHAT I SAID JUST BEFORE I LEFT (SALISBURY). ACTUALLY I KNOW THIS IS A WORRYING TIME FOR RHODESIANS AND THIS IS WHAT I HAVE ASKED PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND, PARTICULARLY THE BRITISH THAT THIS IS MAINLY A RHODESIAN PROBLEM WE ARE DEALING WITH. IT AFFECTS THE LIVES, I THINK, OF 100 PERCENT OF RHODESIANS BECAUSE I DOUBT WHETHER THERE WOULD BE ONE PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE IN BRITAIN WHO WOULD RAISE AN EYEBROW WHATEVER COMES OUT OF THIS CONFERENCE."
