INTRODUCTION: Heavy police reinforcements were waiting in the Spanish town of Aranjuez on Saturday (18 July), when thousands of right-wing extremists arrived to celebrate the 45th anniversary of General Franco's military uprising which started the civil war. Senor Blas Pinar, the only ultra-rightist elected to the Spanish Parliament, was carried triumphantly into the local bullring where 15,000 of his supporters had gathered.

SYNOPSIS: The celebrations in Aranjuez, just outside Madrid, sparked off protests from Spain's left-wing parties and trade unions. They argued that the date which led to the three-year civil war was nothing to celebrate. Permission for the extreme rightist Fuerza Neuva party to hold other meetings throughout Madrid, and nearby Guadalajara, were refused by the local authorities.

The bans on most of the July 18 celebrations focused the country's attention on this rally. The decision to hold it in Aranjuez angered the local residents who blocked the main road in protest and threatened to leave the town deserted.

Senor Pinar thanked the crowds for their support and said the party had been invited to hold its meetings in many other towns....
Spain, which has the memory of February's attempted rightist coup still fresh in its mind, banned another right-wing rally at El Escorial on Sunday (19 July).
