Background: President Jomo Kenyatta yesterday (Monday) held a private meeting with members of the ruling Kenya African National Union party (KANU) -- believed by political observers to have been concerned mainly with the defeat in a recent by-election of the government candidate in the Gem area.

The by-election defeat of the government candidate by opposition candidate Wasonga Sijeyo gives the minority Kenya People's Union eight seats in the 170-seat assembly, and the opposition believe that if elections were held soon their party would make significant inroads into the KANU majority.

Today (Tuesday) President Kenyatta told the opening session of the National Assembly that he was determined to keep Kenya non-aligned and warned against any attempt to subvert the nation. He did not mention the Kenya People's Union party by name, but political observers in Nairobi believed the warning was directed against the opposition party.
