Background: The Duke of Edinburgh, who is president of the World Wildlife Fund, has been visiting India. On Sunday (28 February) he went to the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajahstan to observe the way the Indian government has been trying to preserve tigers from extinction. For the past twelve years the Indians have been working on Project Tiger. This has involved creating reserves in which the conditions have been adapted to be favourable to tigers. Villages in the reserves have been relocated, forestry work has been stopped and hunting has been banned, although the areas still suffer from some poaching. During the past ten years the number of tigers in India has doubled. Prince Philip saw a good deal of wildlife during his trip to the reserve but he did not actually see a tiger.
