Background: Crack German driver, Von Trips, won the Formula Two Grand Prix car-race at Syracuse, Sicily, Mar 19, after averaging a speed of 100.94 miles-per-hour in the latest Italian Dino 156 Ferrari. In second place - only nineteen seconds behind - was France's Maurice Trintignant in his Cooper-Climax. Third place was taken by Gendebien's Belgian-entered Cooper-Climax.

Britain's Stirling Moss again experienced bad luck when his Porsche was wheeled away with a broken valve in the 26th lap. Until this mishap loss had led all the way by a steady 9-10 seconds.

From them on the first three places were held consistently by Von Trips, Trintignant and Gendabien. Trintignant dramatically closed the gap when he caught up with Trips' Ferrari to make the interval only 5 seconds at the 52nd lap.

Casualty rate was high - only eight finished out of fifteen - and world champion Jack Brabham held fourth place until magneto trouble put his Cooper-Climax out of the race.
