    Background: VARIOUS, KAMPUCHEA

It was four years ago, January 1979, when the Khmer Rouge government of Cambodia was toppled by the Vietnamese-back Heng Samrin, and the country was re-named Kampuchea. Since then the 170,000 strong pro-government forces have been opposed by Khmer Rouge guerrillas, allied to the troops of former Head of State, Prince Norodom Sihanouk and a third group led by former Premier Son Sann, the Khmer Peoples National Liberation Front (KPNLF). It has been by military sources that Vietnamese troops are now well positioned to mount a dry season offensive against the combined 40,000 Kampuchean guerrillas. These men of the KPNLF special forces are on reconnaissance patrol in Battambang province. They know the terrain well and how to disguise their tracks. The objective is to engage the Vietnamese forces, using the element of surprise with a well planned ambush, or hit-and-run tactics. Near Nong Chan KPNLF man foxholes along the front line, while patrols probe the surrounding jungle. It was on one of these sorties that four Heng Samrin soldiers were taken by surprise and captured. The Vietnamese were taken back to guerrilla headquarters for interrogation, after their uniforms and weapons had been confiscated. The area is under KPNLF control. Villagers are encouraged to grow enough food for their own needs in order to become self-supporting. Although China and other countries are trying to bring about ceasefire, the fighting in Kampuchea continues to add to the already awesome casualty list among troops and civilians.
