TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 5: REPORTER: "WOULD YOU SEE THAT MULTI-RACIAL BODIES WOULD BE FORBIDDEN IN RHODESIA EVEN?

SMITH: WELL YOU SEE THIS BUSINESS ABOUT A SWING TO THE RIGHT IS JUST A LOT OF POPPY-COCK I MEAN THIS IS THE RHODESIANS, THEY'RE NOT SWINGING ANYWHERE, THEY'VE JUST GAINED (GARBLE/LAUGHTER) IF THIS ELECTION HAS SHOWN ANYTHING, IT'S SHOWN THAT THE EXTREMISTS ON EITHER SIDE HAVE BEEN SHOVED OUT. AND THIS IS THE SECRET OF RHODESIA, AND I DON'T SAY THIS IN ANY LIGHT-HEARTED MANNER. I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE TO MANY EXTREMISTS- THERE'S TO MUCH RACIALISM ALL OVER THE WORLD. I THINK IT'S A BAD THING, AND I THINK IT'S PARTICULARLY A BAD THING IN AFRICA-THIS IS WHAT PLEASES ME. SURELY THE EXTREMISTS HAVE GOT THEIR ANSWER FROM THE RHODESIAN ELECTORATE-THEY DON'T WANT TO KNOW THEM. WE ARE GOING ALONG THE SAME PATH WE'VE GONE ALONG BEFORE, SO NOBODY CAN SAY WE'VE DEVIATED. I THINK IT'S A RESPONSIBLE ONE-I THINK IT FACES UP TO THE FACTS OF LIFE, BUT IT TRIES TO DO IT IN A DECENT WAY. AND THIS IS THE WAY WE'LL GO ON.

REPORTER: DO YOU THINK THAT A MULTI-RACIAL PARTY HAS A FUTURE IN RHODESIA?

SMITH: I FIND IT A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND PRECISELY WHAT IT IS YOU'RE AIMING AT. AS YOU KNOWN WE HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY FRANK AND HONEST WITH OUR NEW CONSTITUTION, AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OUR HISTORY WE HAVE DIVIDED THE VOTING SIDE BETWEEN THE AFRICAN AND THE EUROPEAN. WE BELIEVE THIS IS A LOGICAL SEQUENCE TO WHAT HAS HAPPENED WITH THE REST OF AFRICA TO THE NORTH OF US. IT'S A LOGICAL NEXT STEP FROM WHAT WE'VE ALWAYS DONE IN RHODESIA. WE'VE DIVIDED THE LAND BETWEEN THE PEOPLE. AND WHAT WE BELIEVE NOW IS THE AFRICAN SHOULD BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO FEEL HIS OWN FEET IN THE POLITICAL WORLD-THAT HE SHOULD'NT BE IN A POSITION WHERE HE COMES IN UNDER THE WING OF THE EUROPEAN'S DOMINANT PARTNER, SO THAT HE'LL BE BRANDED AS A STOOGE AS HAS HAPPENED SO OFTEN IN THE PAST. NOW, THUS IS THE WAY WE ARE GOING IN OUR NEW CONSTITUTION, AND I BELIEVE WE SHOULD GIVE THIS A FAIR TRIAL. I HONESTLY THINK THAT IT IS CAUSE FOR OPTIMISTIC HOPE FOR SUCCESS IN THIS NEW OUTLOOK WHICH OUR NEW CONSTITUTION BRINGS TO RHODESIA."

Background: PRIME MINISTER IAN SMITH WON AN OVERWHELMING VICTORY ON FRIDAY (10 APRIL) IN RHODESIA'S FIRST ELECTION SINCE THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE FROM COUNTRY'S NEW REPUBLICAN PARLIAMENT.

PERHAPS THE GREATEST SURPRISE OF THE ELECTION WAS THAT BLACK CANDIDATES OF THE BI-RACIAL ENTRE PARTY WON SEVEN OF THE EIGHT SEATS RESERVED FOR BLACK VOTERS, ECLIPSING THREE PARTIES THAT ARE EXCLUSIVELY AFRICAN IN MEMBERSHIP.

AFTER HIS VICTORY MR SMITH WAS QUESTIONED BY REPORTERS.
