Background: The people of British Guiana acclaimed Princess Margaret as the "Calypso Princess" when she arrived in Georgetown, the capital of this "Land of Waters", early this evening in a river steamer. She had flown from Tobago.

She landed at Atkinson Field, 25 miles from the city, soon after lunch. After a fanfare of trumpets she was greeted by the Governor, Sir Patrick Renison.

Leading personalities of the colony presented to Her Highness included the Archbishop of the West Indies, Dr. A. J. Knight, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Minister of Trade and Commerce, and his wife Janet, who is Minister of Labour, Health and Housing.

It was noticeable that Mrs Jagan did not curtsy to the Princess, although her husband bowed. The only other woman presented who did not curtsy was Mrs Fred Bowman, whose husband is an associate of Dr. Jagan and was charged with sedition during the disorders of 1953.

The trip to Georgetown took two hours and was followed by a ceremonial drive to Government House, in the centre of the city, where the Princess was to stay during her three-day visit. It is a rambling, old-fashioned colonial mansion built 50 or 60 years ago.

Royal blue and turquoise carpets and many paintings of British Guiana scenes make the Georgetown Residency a cheerful place inside. The Princess's bedroom has been air-conditioned.

Georgetown is indeed more lavishly decorated for her visit than was Port of Spain; its spacious main avenue, shaded by huge flamboyant trees, is gay with flags and banners and night illuminations, and thousands of people have come in from distant outlying areas to join in the festivities of the three days.
