Background: When the people of Dayton, Ohio, talk of Ford's Air Force they're not referring to President Ford ... but to Master Sergeant Gordon Ford, USAF.

He's had a lifelong passion for building model aircraft, and they're so brilliantly detailed they can even pass for the real thing. It's an appropriate pastime in dayton, home of those aviation pioneers, the Wright Brothers.

In his off-duty time, Sgt. Ford has built more than 40 flying models -- and he now travels the country with them to support USAF recruiting drives. The biggest has a wingspan of 20 feet (6 metres) and can fly at about 40 miles an hour (64 km/h). And it has about one-third the horsepower of the first Wright Brothers' aircraft.
