Background: Film has reached us from Moscow Television showing competitors taking part in the recent Russian Gold Ring Motor Rally. The rally gets its name from the string of medieval Russian towns - Suzdal, Vladimir, Yaroslavl and Kostroma - through which the 4,000 km. (2,500-mile) route passes.

The route also passes through Moscow, and competitors are seen passing through a checkpoint near the city centre. They are also seen driving hard on country roads about 1,000 km (600 miles) from the end of the course.

The competitors, driving Volga and Moskvich cars, spend about 70 hours at the wheel during the rally.

Little has been heard of Soviet rallying since the impressive Moskvich entries in the London-Sydney Marathon of 1969, when all four cars crossed the line, and the 1970 World Cup rally, when three of the five cars entered reached Mexico city.
