    Background: VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Competitors from a record 32 countries have been taking part in the third Women's World Judo Championship being staged in Vienna. On November 11 World titles were won by three women. Karen Briggs of the U.K. took the Bantamweight (under 48 kgs) division when she defeated Frenchwoman Marie-France Colignon, a repeat of the 1982 World title in Paris when Briggs beat Colignon in the final. Kaori Yamaguchi of Japan triumphed in the Featherweight division (under 52 kgs) with a final victory over Austria's Edith Hrovat. The Austrian was given repeated warnings for having both hands on one side of the opponent's jacket and despite her obvious determination she could not get the better of the superior Yamaguchi. Twice winner of the World Open title, Belgium's Ingrid Bergmans had already captured her first World Championship in her own Light Heavyweight division with a spirited display of competitive judo against West German rival Barbara Classen. On November 11 she faced Marjolein Van Unen in defence of her Open title. Bergmans confirmed her standing as the undisputed queen of international judo. She took on some of the largest women in the sport and convincingly beat them all. In the final she beat her Dutch opponent with a superb armlock. It was the first time that one woman competitor had won both the Open and Weight category gold medals
