Background: A combined South Vietnamese and Cambodian task force yesterday (Friday) reported it had driven North Vietnamese forces from one of two mountain passes on the major supply route linking Phnompenh with the country's only deepwater port at Kompong Som.

Military reports said government troops had secured Chhay Pass after heavy fighting yesterday in which 41 North Vietnamese and Vietcong were killed. Five government soldiers were killed and 28 wounded in the fighting.

South Vietnamese aircraft attacked North Vietnamese positions earlier with bombs and rockets while artillery poured in ground support. South Vietnamese rangers, supported by tanks then captured Chhay Pass from which guerillas had dominated Highway Four for almost two months.

The rangers and another combined task force plan to link up for an attack on the main Pich Nil Pass still in guerilla hands. More than 5,000 South Vietnamese troops have joined 8,000 Cambodians in the operation - the largest combined offensive in the ten months of fighting in Cambodia.
