    Background: In Jerusalem on Monday(17 May) Prime Minister Golda Meir made a statement to the Knesset(Parliament) concerning the trial of nine jews in the Soviet Union. Eight of the nine are charged with helping to plot of foiled plane hijack last June. Most of the defendants are also accused of spreading Anti-Soviet literature.

    The Prime Minister called on the nations of the world to protest the trials. She said the defendants' "only crime is that they stubbornly chose to remain jews and wanted to leave the Soviet Union and immigrate to Israel". Informed sources said that Foreign Minister Abba Eban told the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet, on Sunday(16 May) of developments in the trial, which prompted the address by Mrs Meir.

    SYNOPSIS: On Sunday, Foreign Minister Abba Eban reported to the Cabinet on developments in the current trial of nine jews in the Soviet Union. As a result of that briefing, Prime Minister Golda Meir chose to address the Knesset on Monday concerning the trials.

    Mrs Meir said that jews and non-jews throughout the world support the accused nine in feeling and action, with the Hope they will be freed. She said the Israeli government supports the jews on trial and is waiting to greet the when they are released. Calling on nations of the world to protest the trials, she said that the "accusations are completely unfounded and their only crime is that they stubbornly chose to remain jews and wanted to leave the Soviet Union and immigrate to Israel".
