Background: The Republic of Dagestan, just west of the Caspian Sea in the Soviet Union, is still recovering from the effects of a severe earthquake which hit the area on 30th July. The earthquake also caused severe damage in Northern Iran.

Towns and villages were badly hit throughout Dagestan. A number of people are known to have died. While refugees have been heading for larger towns and cities, aircraft and trains have ferried a constant supply of food and drugs into the Republic. Many of Russia's main cities, including Moscow, Leningrad, and Tashkent, have been keeping up a flow of relief supplies to the inhabitants. Meanwhile, survivors have been sheltering in temporary tent villages, and field hospitals are managing to cope with the welfare of the sick and wounded.
