Background: The tenth conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (W.F.B.) held its opening session in Colombo last week (25 May). The five-day conference, attended by about 250 lay and religious delegates from 50 countries, had as its theme, "World Peace Through Buddhism."
The W.F.B. was founded 22 years ago, based on the inspiration of an eminent Buddhist of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon. Nine conferences have been held since in various Buddhist countries.
Special guests from abroad and the host country filled the open-air Navarangahala Auditorium for the opening session. Seven trays of jasmine flowers were offered before the Buddha statue by Princes Poon Pismai Diskul, President of the W.F.B.
Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, told the international conference that an unrelenting march towards materialism was lowering moral and spiritual standards. The Prime Minister, who is indisposed, did not attend the opening session, but her message was read out by the Minister for Irrigation, Power and Highways, Mr. Maitripala Senanayake.
