Background: Saigon police yesterday (Thursday) arrested an anti-government candidate for next Sunday's National Assembly elections whose campaign posters depict President Nixon as another Hitler.

It happened at a rally called by the candidate, Mr Tran Tuan Nham, to protest against a South Vietnamese government order confiscating his posters.

Students joined in the rally which began with a march through the streets of Saigon. It ended just behind the National Assembly building where Mr Nham denounced President Thieu, alleging he had rigged Sunday's elections.

Soon afterwards police arrived and ordered the rally to stop. Mr Nham refused. The police then drew their batons and stopped it themselves.

Mr Nham was forcibly detained, along with 10 Buddhist students who tried to prevent his arrest.
