Background: Over eight hundred members of the nationalist Hindu party, the Jan Sangh, marched through the streets of Bombay on Friday (July 7) in protest at Monday's (July 3) peace accord between India and Pakistan.

The demonstrators, both men and women, described the agreement as a 'sell-out'. The six-point accord, signed in Simla, India, after a five-day summit meeting between Indian Premier Mrs. Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfikar Bhutto, went into effect immediately. It covers the promotion of 'a durable peace' between the two nations, and provides for compromise on major points like the Kashmir line.

During the demonstration an effigy and copies of the agreement were burnt on a symbolic funeral pyre. Police were out in force to control the demonstrators, but no violent incidents were reported. Barricades were set up by police to prevent the demonstration reaching its target, the Town Hall, and no serious attempt was made to get through them.
