Background: Many Greek streams were recently stocked with Canadian rainbow trout following a goodwill gesture by the Canadian Fish and Game Branch of the Department of Recreation and Conservation, Vancouver, D.C. After two months in government hatcheries at Yannina, 300,000 baby trout were delivered in special cans to lakes and rivers in various parts of Greece - particularly the central district of Boeotia.
In some remote Greek streams are a few big trout, stocked in 1945/6 by a British party despite the fact that Communist guerrilla battalions attempted to exterminate the fish stock by using dynamite.
Capital of Boeotia - known in ancient times as "Kingdom of Minyans" - is the ancient city of Orchomenos, which, according to Greek philosophers, was one of the richest regions in fish stock in ancient Greece. Decisions of the Athens Fish and Game Club to stock the region with trout will supply a new food to inhabitants of surrounding villages.
