Background: West German police used teargas and water cannon to repel demonstrators who tried to storm the site of a planned nuclear power station at Brokdorf near Hamburg on Sunday (21 December).

SYNOPSIS: About 4,000 anti-nuclear demonstrators marched towards the site, flanked by police in riot gear. The site has been sealed off by high fences and a most after several violent demonstrations there in the past. Construction was stopped while the environmentalists obtained a court injunction.

Consent to continue building has since been given and three weeks ago construction resumed. This prompted the protests, which turned into a pitched battle between motorcycle-helmeted demonstrators and police. A group of militants throwing petrol bombs and flares tried to break into the site, but the police beat them off with water jets and teargas. Three policemen were injured but no arrests were made and it was not known if any demonstrators were hurt.
