Background: On Monday (7 August) the Ivory Coast celebrated the twelfth anniversary of its independence at celebrations in the northern city of Odienne.

President Felix Houphouet-Boigny was on hand at the ceremonies that combined displays of military, traditional and economic aspects of Ivory Coast life.

Odienne was chosen as the centre of this year's independence festivities because of its dramatic growth in the last few years following a massive injection of government capital in the area. Odienne stands on an important crossroads of the main routes linking The Ivory Coast with Mali and Guinea.
