Background: In Bonn on Sunday (20 May) 6,000 members of the Junge Union (Young Conservatives) demonstrated against the current visit to West Germany of Soviet Communist Party leader Mr. Leonid Brezhnev.

The demonstrators marched in silence through the centre of Bonn, while police mounted a heavy guard. No incidents were reported as the marchers filed into the market place, scane last month, of a storming and temporary occupation by left-wingers protesting against a visit by President Nguyen Van Thieu of South Vietnam.

The march concluded with a rally outside the City hall. Speakers included Franz Ludwig Count Stauffenberg, whose father was executed in 1944 for his part in the General's plot to assassinate Hitler.

Count Stauffenberg told the rally that minority groups in the Soviet Union Were persecuted, defamed, and tortured. Exiled Czech Chess Grandmaster Ludek Pechman, told the cheering marchers, 'We must be happy hat Mr. Brezhnev only brought 50 people with him this time. When he visited us in 1968 he came with 7,000 tanks and 600,000 soldiers'.

Mr. Pachman called on West Germans not to confirm the status quo in urops and told them that if they were indifferent to the freedom of East european countries it was the start of their own loss of freedom.

Mr. Brezhnev is in West Germany for a five-day visit. He leaves on Wednesday (23 May). On Saturday (19 May) he signed an agreement with the West German Chancellor Herr Willy Brandt for scientific, technological and industrial cooperation between their two countries.
