Background: Egyptian tennis champion Ismail El Shafei gained a three sets win over the Polish player J. Niedzwiedzki at the Gezira Club in Cairo on Friday (May 4). With Ibrahim Mahmoud beating Nowicki on the same day, and an Egyptian doubles victory on Saturday, Egypt had built up a 3-0 lead in this second round European Zone Davis Cup tie.
In the singles against Niedzwiedzki, Shafei won the first set 6-3; had to fight hard from a difficult position to win the second 7-5; and served an ace to win the third set 6-1. The third set is the one seen in this film.
El Shafei is Egypt's only professional player. This is the first year that professionals have participated in the Davis Cup. With this 3-0 lead, Egypt must go through to the next round.
