Background: Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Shaith Ahmed Kalifeh Swcideh, paid a chert official visit to Syria earlier this week (21 June) to discuss the Lebanon war.
SYNOPSIS: During his stay Sheikh Sweideh had talks in the capital, Damascus, with Syria's President Hafez al-Assad and foreign Minister Abdel Halim Kaddam. The main theme of their discussions centred around the civil war in Lebanon, and Syria's armed intervention to restore peace. Although the Untied Arab Emirates do not have any troops with the six-nation Arab League peace-keeping force which began arriving in Lebanon on Monday, they are concerned about the situation. A meeting of the Arab League has just ended in Damascus and a another meeting of the Leagua's Council was due to be held in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday (23 June) to discuss the progress of its peace-keeping efforts in Lebanon.
