Background: Screaming sirens and clanging bells called out all hands at the United States Naval Base at Guantanamo, Cuba, Dec. 5, to start a major exercise for defending the base.
Marines - clutching rifles - had already left their barracks to scout near the fence that separates the base from Cuban territory. This training exercise was similar to those conducted each month within the 27-mile rim of the base. U.S. Navy and Marine training aircraft, "A4D" attack bombers and "F8U" interceptor planes roared above Guantanamo to test aerial defences.
Most of the weapons used by the Marines are automatic rifles, machine guns, and rifle grenades - in addition to a few medium tanks.
