Background: Under floodlight at the Olympic Stadium, Amsterdam, Holland, April 19, Mexico beat the Dutch national soccer team by two goals to one.
The Mexicans were faster on the ball, and settled down quicker before the 60,000 spectators, but both sides kicked wildly in front of goal, and it was not until the 30th minute that Mexico's outside-right, Del Aquila, put the visitors one goal ahead. A lead they held until the interval.
Dutch play improved in the second half. They besieged the Mexican goal and had bad luck with several near misses. Then, twenty-five minutes after the interval the referee awarded a penalty against the Mexicans and Dutch centre-forward Wilkes slammed the ball hard into the net to equalize.
Now the crowd were really excited, but the Mexicans fought back at the top of their form and were close to scoring many times. A short while before the final whistle, they were awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area and Cardenas, the Mexican right-half, took it. His shot rebounded off the Dutch defensive 'wall', but it bounced back and this time he made no mistake to score Mexico's second goal.
Mexico are to play England at Wembley on May 10th.
