SV Hammoud El-Choufi announces his resignation as Syria's Ambassador to United Nations
EL-CHOUFI: "In the absence of genuine democratic processes rampant practises of corruption, extortion and bribery have remained unchecked. Assad's recently announced and much publicised campaign to wipe out corruption from his government had to be halted after it became clear that it would implicate personal friends and relatives for whom he had secured choice governmental and military positions. Many patriotic Syrians, civilians and military alike, who have criticised these policies or oppose the practices of the Assad regime have been silenced by arrest and incarceration. Amnesty International has documented the many violations of human rights of political detainees in Syria including the use of torture and the denial of the criminals rights to a fair trial and open hearing. Despite (indistinct) the Assad regime has done nothing but pay lip service to the cause of Arab unity against zionist Israel. On two previous occasions when Arab unity was essential and could possibly have been forged, first with Egyptian, Libyan Syrian unification affair and second with the Syrian, Jordan unification affair the Assad regime merely exploited its popular esteem and later didn't hesitate to abort the unification affair. I believe that the only solution to the problem faced by my country today lies in the formation of a viable and formidable front built upon active participation and full involvement of all ....political forces of the Syrian peoples who uphold the ideas of national unity, Arab nationalism and above all re ready to defend their democratic aspirations and demands of the Syrian people. I have asked you to come today in order that I may formally announce my resignation from the post of ambassador and permanent representative of the Syrian Republic to the United Nations and to let you know of my intention to devote my affairs together with other patriotic forces to this task which lies before us. I intend to take up this responsibility with the zeal and fervour that is required in order that the long
awaited national front for a truly democratic and freedom loving Syria will be established and so that the country can once again take its place in the forefront of the cause for Arab unity, solidarity, genuine democracy and (indistinct). I thank you."
