Background: Cycle racing..and there was excitement at London's Wembley arena on Wednesday (24 September) when Don Allan and Danny Clark of Australia won the Skol six-day race which they had led from the start.

SYNOPSIS: This is the final 30-minute team relay session which won the marathon race for the Australians. In the opening session, however, they had been forced to concede their one-lap advantage. The aggressors were Patrick Sercu, the Belgian six-day king, and his West German partner Albert Fritz and the danish pair, Gert Frank and Kim Svendsen. Allan and Clark often seemed to be courting danger during the first relay session.

At one point in the first 30-minute race, the Australians held on to their overall lead only because of points they'd been awarded for subsidiary events.

Belgium's Patrick Sercu has won the Skol 6-day race eight times. It's unlikely his cycling record will ever be overtaken. Don Allan turned professional in 1974. Last November he and Danny Clark - who is the new World Keirin champion - won the european Teams race Championship in Copenhagen.

Danny Clark waves his arms in victory in the final as he and Don allan win the six-day marathon race. A fine win and a fanfare of trumpets from the Royal Household Cavalry.

After the race both Australians needed medical treatment. Don Allan had a strained ligament in his right arm and Danny Clark had influenza and bronchitis. But they'd beaten their nearest rivals, Frank and Svendsen by one lap.
