Background: NABLUS, IN THE ISRAELI-OCCUPIED WEST BANK OF THE JORDAN RIVER, OBSERVED THE SECOND DAY OF A GENERAL STRIKE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AS RIOT SQUADS OF ISRAELI FRONTIER POLICE PATROLLED THE CITY. LATER, AFTER A CURFEW HAD BEEN LIFTED, ABOUT 200 YOUTHS STAGED A DEMONSTRATION IN THE KASBAH.

THE GENERAL STRIKE, WHICH HAS BROUGHT BUSINESS IN NABLUS TO A STANDSTILL, WAS CALLED LAST TUESDAY (4 FEBRUARY) AS A PROTEST AGAINST THE BEHAVIOUR OF ISRAELI MILITARY AUTHORITIES IN THE CITY. THE STRIKE CALL FOLLOWED THE IMPOSITION OF A CURFEW BY THE ISRAELI AUTHORITIES AS A COUNTER-MEASURE TO CAR-STONING, FRONTIER POLICE PATROLLED THE CITY YESTERDAY.

WITH BUSINESS HALTED AND SHOPS CLOSED, PEOPLE STOOD IN GROUPS AND READ NEWSPAPERS PLACED ON WALLS.

ANTI-ISRAELI SLOGANS WERE SCRAWLED ON THE WALLS AND DOOR OF A GIRLS' SCHOOL IN NABLUS. ISRAELI TROOPS ENTERED THE SCHOOL ON MONDAY FOLLOWING DISTURBANCES THERE AND A NUMBER OF GIRL STUDENTS WERE DETAINED. THE ENTRY OF THE TROOPS INTO THE SCHOOL WAS SAID TO BE ANOTHER FACTOR CONTRIBUTING TO THE STRIKE.

YESTERDAY, THE ISRAELI AUTHORITIES LIFTED A CURFEW IMPOSED ON THE KASBAH, BUT SOON AFTERWARDS CROWDS OF YOUTHS MOVED INTO THE STREETS AND STAGED A DEMONSTRATION. SOME OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WAVED A JORDANIAN FLAG AND SHOUTED SLOGANS IN SUPPORT OF PRESIDENT NASSER AND YASSIR ARAFAT. NEWLY-ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANISATION. THE DEMONSTRATORS MADE NO ATTEMPT TO LEAVE THE KASBAH.

THE CURFEW WAS RE-IMPOSED ON THE KASBAH AREA FOLLOWING THE DEMONSTRATION.
