Background: Four rockets fired into Saigon by the Vietcong on Monday (november 2nd) killed seven Vietnamese civilians and damaged or destroyed seven buildings.

The attack, which came on the seventh anniversary of the death of former President Diem, was the first on Saigon in more than three months.

The rockets attack came in the early morning. One missile landed near the central market, some 50 yards from Independence Palace where president Thieu lives. Another crashed into a dockside area killing five and wounding two. The others exploded in the banking and commercial district and in Saigon's ninth district.

Following an old tradition, food was lain beside some of the bodies, as nourishment for the souls.

A few hours later several thousand marched through the heavily guarded streets taking flowers to the unmarked grave of Diem. Similar ceremonies have been held in past years but this was the biggest.
