  • Description

POLICE LAUNCHES; RADIO CITY; INTERVIEW WITH STATION STAFF MAN.

    TRANSCRIPT:

STAFF MAN: IT'S AMAZING - WE WERE WAKENED UP ON MONDAY MORNING ABOUT HALF-PAST THREE AND WE FOUND A VERY LARGE TUG STANDING BY WITH ABOUT 15 MEN -- ALL VERY LARGE, BURLY MEN-WALKING ABOUT, OBVIOUSLY LOOKING FOR TROUBLE OR READY FOR IT, AND THREE PEOPLE WHO WERE RUNNING THE ISSUE TOLD US THEY WERE PUTTING SOME MEN ON BOARD FOR OUR OWN PROTECTION. THIS IS ONE OF MANY STORIES THEY TOLD US AND OBVIOUSLY IT TURNED OUT THAT THIS WAS NOT THE CASE.

INTERVIEWER: THEY MANAGED TO GET ABOARD?

STAFF MAN: OH, THEY GOT ABOARD - WELL, THEY HAD GRAPPLING IRONS AND ROCKET LINES AND ALL THE EQUIPMENT. WE COULDN'T POSSIBLY STOP THEM EVEN IF WE'D SEEN THEM.

Background: THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT WAS TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) SCHEDULED TO DEBATE THE QUESTION OF PIRATE RADIO STATIONS-- COMMERCIAL RADIO STATIONS THAT BROADCAST TO BRITAIN OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY'S TERRITORIAL WATERS, THEREBY EVADING LAWS THAT BAN COMMERCIAL RADIO TRANSMISSIONS IN BRITAIN. EARLIER THIS EVENING, POLICE BOARDED RADIO CITY, A PIRATE STATION IN THE THAMES ESTUARY OFF SHEERNESS, TO QUESTION AFTER A REPORT THAT A NUMBER OF MEN LANDED ON THE STATION ON MONDAY AND TOOK IT OVER. THE STATION HAS NOT BEEN BROADCASTING SINCE THEN.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS COMMITTED TO STAMPING OUT THE 10 PIRATE RADIO STATIONS WHICH, FROM ANCHORED SHIPS AND OLD SEA FORTS, POUR OUT NON-STOP POP MUSIC AND ADVERTISING COMMERCIALS.

OUR REPORTER INTERVIEWED A STATION EMPLOYEE, WHO RECOUNTED MONDAY'S EVENTS.

THIS MORNING, IN COURT AT SAFFRON WALDEN, ESSEX, A BUSINESSMAN WAS CHARGED WITH THE SHOTGUN KILLING OF 37-YEAR-OLD REG CALVERT, MANAGER OF RADIO CITY. THE ACCUSED WAS OLIVER SMEDLEY, 54, DIRECTOR OF 20 COMPANIES AND A FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE LIBERAL PARTY EXECUTIVE. SMEDLEY DENIED THE CHARGE. HE ASKED FOR BAIL BUT WAS REMANDED IN CUSTODY FOR A WEEK. POLICE TOLD THE COURT THEY FOUND CALVERT DEAD WITH SHOTGUN WOUNDS IN THE CHEST AT SMEDLEY'S 17TH-CENTURY COTTAGE NEAR SAFFRON WALDEN.
