Background: British model Sarah-Jane Hutt, was crowned Miss World 1983 in London on November 17. Sarah-Jane, a 19 year old brunette from Poole in Dorset, won the title from an original field of 72 girls. A jury of seven men and two women at the Royal Albert Hall, in London, picked Miss United Kingdom out of a final line-up of seven contestants. She received a kiss from pop star Adam Ant and was crowned by last year's Miss World, Mariasela Lebron, from the Dominican Republic. Sarah-Jane won GBP30,000 sterling in prize money when she became the fourth Briton to win the title, plus a GBP25,000 contract to make personal appearances around the world. The runner up was Miss Colombia, Rocio Luna Florez, aged 18, and in third place was Miss Brazil, 20 year old Catia Silveira Pedrosa. After the competition, the new Miss World said she was looking forward to travelling extensively and working for charity. Sarah-Jane Hutt is the second Miss World to come from Poole in Dorset. Ann Sydney won the title in 1964. Asked why Dorset produced such beauties, Sarah-Jane said, 'It must be the air'.
