Background: President Jean Bedel Bokassa of the Central African Republic arrived in Taipei on Thursday (October 8) at the start of a 10-day official visit to Taiwan. Mr. Liao Chung-Chin, Taiwan's ambassador to the Central African Republic, escorted President Bokassa from Hung Kong to Taiwan, where the African leader was greeted by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek.
President Bokassa and his 23-member official entourage were accorded full military honours, including a 21-gun salute. Ranking government officials and members of the foreign diplomatic corps were presented to the visiting head of state.
The fifth African head of state to visit Taiwan, President Bokassa said he was confident that friendship and co-operation would further strengthen relations between the two countries. He is the guest of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek during his stay.
Thousands of people lined the streets to cheer the guest as he drove with Taiwanese leader in a motorcade to the Grand Hotel.
President Bokassa will meet government leaders for talks on problems of common interest to the two countries. He will take part in the National Day celebrations on Saturday and will later make a four-day trip to central and southern Taiwan to visit industrial projects and military bases.
Earlier in the week President Bokassa spent four days in Lagos where he had talks with Federal Nigerian leader Major-General Yakubu Gowon. After visiting Taiwan, President Bokassa will go to New York to attend the General Assembly of the United Nations.
