Background: A bomb exploded near the residence Portugal's new Prime Minister, Admiral Jose Azevedo, on Sunday (21 September).

Although unhurt, the Admiral was reported to be shaken by the incident. There were no reports of casualties.

The bomb, a small grenade device, was thrown at the building where the Admiral has a flat early in morning. There is a naval officer' mess in the building.

As Naval Chief of Staff, Admiral Azevedo has the use of the apartment on the top floor and he was sleeping there when the explosion happened. According to Reuters, an anonymous telephone caller purporting to speak on behalf of a right-wing group claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The caller told foreign news agencies in Lisbon that the self-styled "Portuguese Liberation Army" was responsible for the blast.

It smashed the huge front door of the rambling building, broke windows, and damaged a few pieces of furniture.

According to Reuters, the telephone caller said: "This bomb was of small force. For the moment we are not calming victims. Our action are limited to showing our ability for penetrating the highest military organs."
Reports from Lisbon said that Admiral Exuviate heads a government dominated by Socialists, Centrists and moderate officers which last Friday replaced the Pro-Communist administration of General Vasco Goncalves.
