"The Pirates seemed to have the game won with a three-run eleventh inning high-lighted by this two-run double by Ed Kirkpatrick. Pittsburgh, which at one time led by five and trailed by three, was back in front twelve to nine. But the Cardinals had an even more productive eleventh innings-scoring four runs. Ted Sizemore scored one of them when Ted Simmons doubled. The hit sent Reggie Smith around to third. The Cardinals have played seventeen extra-innings games and they've won thirteen of them. Pittsburgh's extra-innings record is ten and ten. Jim Minshaw came in to pitch for the pirates. They used seven pitchers and St Louis used five. Minshaw to Joe Torrey to ground to the right side of the infield, but a throwing error by Rennie Stenart allowed Smith and Simmons to score and the game was tied at twelve apiece. Stenart also committed an error in the fifth, but prior to that he played fifty-nine straight errorless games. After Ken Reed struck out, pinch-runner Larry Hearndon went to third. McBride was safe at first. Then Jim Dwyer, a seldom used rooky outfielder, sent Hearndon across with the winning run by hitting a sacrifice fly. Manager Red Shandeish called the Cardinals' victory the biggest one of the season. Pittsburgh's Danny Mertoss said the loss won't kill his team.

Background: With their most important victory of the season, the US baseball team the St Louis Cardinals regained first place in the National League East.

Their 13-12 home ground win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday (26 September) reversed the Cardinals loss against the Pirates the previous night.

Thursday's game was the last between the two sides this year. It broke the Pirates hold over the St Louis side. With Wednesday night's victory they had between the Cardinals four times in a row, regaining first place in the League. But after their loss on Thursday, the Pirates manager said it wouldn't kill his team.

The Pittsburgh team faces four games in New York and three at home against Chicago while the Cardinals will play three in Chicago and three in Montreal.
