Background: THE WEST GERMAN PARLIAMENT TODAY (WEDNESDAY) TOOK THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS DOING AWAY WITH THE 20-YEAR LIMIT ON THE PROSECUTION OF NAZI WAR CRIMINALS.BUNDESTAG (THE LOWER HOUSE) MEMBERS VOTED TO REFER TO A COMMITTEE TWO MOTIONS WHICH WOULD ENABLE THE HUNT FOR THE CRIMINALS TO GO ON AFTER THE MAY 8 DEADLINE.REPORTS SAID THE MOTIONS WOULD ALMOST CERTAINLY BE ULTIMATELY APPROVED BY PARLIAMENT.

THE DEBATE, WHICH WAS TELEVISED ACROSS THE NATION, LASTED SEVEN HOURS.THE VOTE IN FAVOUR OF THE MOTIONS WAS OVERWHELMING.AFTERWARDS, THE SPEAKER SAID: "I FEEL THIS DECISION IS TO THE HONOUR OF THE BUNDESTAG."
(UNDER THE PRESENT LAW, IT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE TO INITIATE PROSECUTIONS AGAINST NAZI CRIMINALS AFTER MAY 8, THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF THE GERMAN SURRENDER IN WORLD WAR TWO.TODAY'S DEBATE FOLLOWED WORLD-WIDE PROTESTS OVER AN EARLIER WEST GERMAN CABINET DECISION NOT TO EXTEND THE PROSECUTION TIME LIMIT).

(IN TEL AVIV, ISRAELI OFFICIALS EXPRESSED SATISFACTION AT TODAY'S TURN OF EVENTS).

SYNOPSIS: BUT THE PAMPHLET HAD LITTLE EFFECT.THE BUNDESTAG TOOK THE FIRST STEP TO DOING AWAY WITH THE 20-YEAR PROSECUTION LIMIT, WHICH RUNS OUT ON MAY THE 8TH.MEMBERS VOTED OVERWHELMINGLY TO REFER TO A COMMITTEE TWO MOTIONS WHICH WOULD ENABLE THE HUNT FOR THE CRIMINALS TO GO ON AFTER THE DEADLINE.IT SEEMS CERTAIN THAT THE MOTIONS WILL ULTIMATELY BE APPROVED BY PARLIAMENT.
