Background: President Jaafar el Nimeiry, continuing his first trip outside the Sudan since crushing the July coup against him, flew to Cairo yesterday (Friday) for talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The visit came only a couple days after the referendum giving overwhelming support to the federation of Egypt, Libya and Syria. President Nimeiry has pledged that Sudan will join the federation after solving internal difficulties. Before their talks -- which were naturally expected to centre on the union -- General Nimeiry and President Sadat paid homage at the tomb of another great worker in the cause of Arab unity, President Nasser.

SYNOPSIS: Continuing his first tour outside Sudan since suppressing the July coup, President Jaafar el-Nimeiry flew to Cairo for important talks on Friday. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Prince Sultan Ibn Abdel Aziz led the welcome. The Sudanese leader was arriving from Tripoli, where he attended the second anniversary celebrations of the Libyan revolution that brought Colonel Gaddafi to power. His tour also coincided with the referendum which gave overwhelming support to the planned federation between Egypt, Syria and Libya. President Nimeiry has pledged that Sudan will eventually join the new federation.

Before starting their talks, the Sudanese and Egyptian leaders first paid homage to another great worker in the cause of Arab unity -- the late President Nasser. They visited his tomb at the Nasser Mosque They were subsequently to hold their first round of talks in Cairo. The two leaders were meeting for the second time in less than a month. Their talks were expected to centre on Sudanese co-operation with the new federation -- which Sudan is likely to join after stabilising her internal political situation -- and on latest developments in the Arab-Israeli confrontation. The two presidents were later to leave together on a special train for Alexandria to continue their consultations.
