Background: Boardsailing..... and competitors had to contend with very calm conditions on the fifth and last day of the 1982 World Cup Championships on June 16. This was the second year running it has been held at Erin Bay, with the open competition attracting top professionals and amateurs from Europe and Australia. Organised by the Isle of Man Tourist Board and Gaastra Sails, the events started with free style and triangle racing, then 'ins and outs' hurdles, a slalom and a marathon. Marathon winner Ben Wesseling, from the netherlands, won the Championship and the Cup with a 5.4 score, two points ahead of Dee Caldwell from the United Kingdom. France's Luc Mery came third with 9.7 points. This booming sport is now firmly established, with more and more enthusiasts hoping it will be included in the 1984 Olympic Games.
