Background: THE NATIONAL RADICAL UNION HAS CONCEDED DEFEAT TO MR GEORGE PAPANDREOU'S UNION OF THE CENTRE PARTY IN TODAY'S (SUNDAY) GENERAL ELECTIONS IN GREECE. THE PARTY RETURNS TO POWER AFTER 12 YEARS IN THE POLITICAL WILDERNESS. TODAY'S VOTING WAS HEAVILY OVERSHADOWED BY THE GREEK-TURKISH CRISIS OVER CYPRUS.

THE CENTRE PARTY, LED BY THE 76-YEAR-OLD VETERAN LIBERAL POLITICIAN, MR PAPANDREOU, NARROWLY DEFEATED THE CONSERVATIVE RADICAL UNION AT THE NATIONAL ELECTIONS OF NOVEMBER 3 LAST YEAR. HOWEVER, IT FAILED TO SECURE A SELF-SUPPORTING MAJORITY IN THE NEW PARLIAMENT WHICH KING PAUL OF THE HELLENES HAD TO DISSOLVE AFTER LESS THAN 25 DAYS OF LIFE.

THE UNION OF THE CENTRE PARTY THIS TIME GOT ROUGHLY 54 PER CENT OF THE VOTES AS AGAINST 42 PER CENT IN NOVEMBER. THE CARETAKER PRIME MINISTER, MR JOHN PARASKEVOPOULOS, TOLD CORRESPONDENTS HE WAS VERY SATISFIED WITH THE CONDUCT OF THE ELECTIONS. "THEY WERE VERY FAIR", HE ADDED, THE POLL WAS ORDERLY AND WITHOUT INCIDENT.
