Background: THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CHEERED AND SHOUTED AS ANTI-MALAYSIA AND ANTI-BRITISH BANNERS AND FLOATS WERE DISPLAYED DURING THE SECOND DAY CELEBRATIONS OF INDONESIA'S EIGHTEENTH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY HELD IN DJAKARTA ON AUGUST 18.

MARCHERS REPRESENTING THE NATIONAL POLITICAL FRONT WAVED BANNERS WITH THE WORDS "MALAYSIA IS MADE IN LONDON" AND "FOIL MALAYSIA."
A FLOAT FEATURED AN EFFIGY OF THE MALAYAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, WITH A ROPE ROUND HIS NECK DANGLING FROM THE FIXED BAYONET OF AN INDONESIAN SOLDIER. OTHERS SHOWED HIM PARTLY HIDDEN IN A HUGE FIRST STAMPED "BRITISH IMPERIALISM."
BARE-CHESTED TRIBESMEN FROM WEST IRIAN, FORMERLY DUTCH WEST NEW GUINEA, STOOD ON ONE FLOAT WAVING SPEARS AND SHOUTING "DESTROY MALAYSIA".

DENSE CROWDS STOOD FIVE PEOPLE DEEP IN NEARBY STREETS TO SEE THE PARADE IN WHICH POLITICAL PARTIES, MASS ORGANISATIONS, UNITS OF THE ARMED FORCES, STATE COMPANIES, GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND OUTLYING REGIONS WERE REPRESENTED.

PRESIDENT SUKARNO WATCHED THE 90-MINUTE PROCESSION FROM A CANOPIED DAIS OF THE STEPS OF HIS FREEDOM PALACE. NEAR HIM SAT CABINET MINISTERS, FOREIGN DIPLOMATS, INCLUDING THE AMBASSADORS OF MALAYA AND BRITAIN.

IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT SUKARNO TOLD THE PEOPLE TO BE PATIENT WITH DRASTIC NEW GOVERNMENT MEASURES AIMED AT ESTABLISHING THE NATION'S CHAOTIC ECONOMY. HE, HOWEVER, DID NOT MENTION MALAYSIA.
