Background: At Nelum Station in France Jet engineers have been carrying out experiments on a large jet engine which is intended, eventually, for use in vertical take-off aircraft.

Their chief 'prop' is a borrowed Diesel train, specially adapted and fitted with instruments to record the thrust of the jet.

The principle of the experiments is that the moving train should simulate the pull of gravity and the opposite force of the jet is measured in relation to this.

Various tests were made, both stationary and with the train moving at varying speeds.

This test-bed on wheels permits the engineers to measure and tackle the problems of the new jet in relative safety. And the outcome of the experiments will play an important part in the development of aviation's latest techniques.
