Background: The French-German experimental communications satellite, Symphonie, was launched into space on Wednesday night (18 December) by a Delta rocket, from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The satellite will test and demonstrate communications equipment for television, radio, telephone, telegraph and data transmission between Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Canada, the United States and a good portion of South America.

It was the first French-German satellite to be launched by a Delta rocket. The launching was watched by a large group of French, West German and American officials.

The spacecraft will provide the equivalent of two channels of colour television transmission and eight voice channels, from a stationary elliptical orbit 22,300 miles from earth over the Equator, off the coast of Liberia.
