A. Resettlement Area
The resettlement area to be visited consists of 89 families out of a total settlement of approximately 220 refugee families that have been settled along the Rach Gia-Long Xuyen ??? These people are predominantly Hoa Hao. Over the past year have fled from Kien Giang, and Phong Dinh provinces located south and east of An Giang. Each family in this settlement received a total of 5,900 piasters from the Government of Vietnam to assist in building their homes an din subsisting until other means of earning a living could be found. At the present time, the majority are employed as farm laborers on the rice lands in the vicinity of the resettlement and augment their income by fishing.

B. Trade School
The co-educational trade school located in the town of Long Xuyen was opened on 1 September 1965 as a Secondary educational facility dealing with technical and vocational skills. The present class is in a sense experimental and it is expected that full enrolment of 500 students will be reached by next Spring. The pupils presently enrolled are engaged in preparing for the regular school session. The carpentry shop is making desks and other furniture for future use. In the textile shop they are now making looms. When in full operation the school will include most vocational skills -- animal husbandry, textile weaving carpentry, metal work and home economics, etc. A supply of hand tools provided by USOM is expected to arrive at the school within the next few days.

C. Long Xuyen Hospital
The Long Xuyen Hospital is now completing a modernization and renovation program supported by USOM. This program includes the provision of automatic laundry facilities, improved lighting, renovation of the maternity ward and expansion of other wards.

The hospital has a capacity of 400 beds but frequently the patient load exceeds this number, and it is not unusual for two patients to share one bed.

The Surgical Suite is manned by an Australian surgical team operating with support for USOM. Arrangements were made with Royal Melbourne Hospital to provide a staff of ten
