"The war crimes trials would be counter productive if the object was to improve relations between India, Pakistan and the other side (Bangladesh) Obviously, the war crimes trials are not going to facilitate it and, for this reason among others, we are opposed to these trials. They're illegal. There's no justification for them under international law. They are a violation of the Geneva Convention and of the Security Council Resolution 307."
PARKS: "A compromise has to be found and you were saying Sheikh Mujib must compromise."
BHUTTO: "We have no further way to compromise. We released Sheikh Mujibur Rahman unilaterally, without conditions. After that we took a number of other gestures towards Mr. Mujibur Rahman and his government, and now I'm going to the National Assembly and I am going to table a Resolution, which we hope will be passed by the National Assembly, that is war trials are not held after the appropriate time after the negotiations, we would be prepared to recognise Bangladesh. What more does he want? With Bangladesh we have been a part of the same country; we have struggled together for Pakistan; we have many values in common. Now they appreciate it a little more than they did in the past when they have got angry and upset. Now the sentiment from West Bengal is coming to the fore and for them the sky is the limit, but they have to choose the level. We are not going to choose the level for them."
