Background: Concern is mounting in the Rhodesian capital, Salisbury, that guerrilla war against the white minority government has broken out on a third front.

Report from the Rhodesia-Zambia border says that on Friday (7 May) a boat carrying Rhodesian technicians war fired on wile the men were repairing a section of the giant Kariba Dam. Their launch was returning from the Zambian side of the dam when a vehicle with about six uniformed men arrived, took cover and ten began firing from Zambia. Two shots hit the launch, without causing injury to the seven occupants.

The Kariba Dam and its lake have so far remained immune from guerrilla attacks because of their vital importance to the two bordering countries.

The hydro-electric power station at Kariba straddles the Zambian-Rhodesian border and serves both countries. The power plant on the Zambian side of the dam is not yet finished, so Zambia's power comes from the Rhodesian side.

According to B.B.C. reporter Phillip Hayton, Zambian President kenneth kaunda knows that if he allows guerrillas to strike in the region he risks retaliation. The flick of a switch could black-out Zambia's copperbelt and devastate her economy.

Rhodesians call the shores of Lake Kariba their Riviera. But with this new attack the government now fears that the national playground could turn into a battleground.
