Background: At the Palace of Justice in Brussels, Mar 26, lists of voting figures began to arrive from suburban and provincial electoral centres, after the close at 2pm of polling in the Belgian General Election. An electorate of nearly six million had been asked to bring in 696 members of nine provincial councils, 212 members of the Chamber of Deputies, and 106 members of the Senate.

Lists arrived in boxes at the Palace of Justice to be sorted by hundreds of officials. At one stage, proceedings were watched by a group of Congolese law students who are doing their practical training here before taking examinations.

A host of newsmen sat in the hall of the information centre, watching the voting figures rise as each new result sheet was put into the projector and flashed on to a large screen.

Premier Eyskens' Government has resigned in the normal course of procedure. His Catholic Party has meanwhile lost its overall majority in the Senate and dropped eight seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
